Skin Tag Removal Brisbane

cosmetic removal of skin tags and growths

What can you do about skin tags? Skin tags are fleshy skin growths that are unsightly and annoying.  They get caught in jewellery and clothes, can get torn, bleed or irritated and inflamed.  They are harmless and people come to get them removed because of appearance or because they have become annoying and irritating.

What causes skin tags?

Skin tags appear on the body, underarms, thighs, bra line, around the neck and even eyelids. They most often appear in areas of friction. They are harmless but annoying. The medical term for skin tag is acrochordon. They are just normal skin and fat tissue and your risk of getting them increases if your parents have them.

Skin tags are benign and rarely cause symptoms. They can be annoying or itchy and occasionally can become swollen and painful if they are irritated.  The cause is not always known, however, they easily removed.

They are harmless skin growths that grow from a thinner stalk of skin hanging off the body. They are mostly skin coloured although sometimes they can be darker in colour.  They are usually only millimetres in length, though sometimes they can grow to centimetres and can appear on any part of the face or body. Common areas include eyelids, the neck, armpit or groin. They occur in areas of skin folds. Some people have an isolated lesion while others develop multiple lesions. About 25% of people will develop skin tags usually starting in their 50’s. They are more common in people who are overweight in areas that get rubbed, or have friction and is common among people with diabetes.

Risk Factors for Getting Skin Tags?

Men and women are affected by skin tags at equal rates. but there are a few things linked to risk of developing them.

1. Being overweight.

The principal reason that being overweight increases the risk of skin tags is simply because of friction as the skin is more likely to rub against itself or clothing. So under the arms, between thighs, under bra area or on the neck where necklaces rub.

2. Pregnancy. during pregnancy not only can increased size increase the risk of friction and rugby, but also it seems that you are more susceptible to increase in number and also the size of existing skin tags.

3. Diabetes

Diabetics are more prone to skin take but there is no clear understanding of why this happens.

Getting Rid of Skin Tags

The best way to get rid of skin tags depends on their size and position on the body.

Do you have unwanted moles and skin tags or seborrhoeic keratosis you want to be removed? Dr Shadi Khalili performs cosmetic mole and skin tag removal.  Skin Tag removal is simple using a radiofrequency surgical loupe; it requires no stitches and simple dressing procedure. Skin tag removal is suitable for all skin types and provides an affordable option.

Skin Tag Removal

Growths treated include skin tags, seborrhoeic keratoses, senile warts etc.  However, any pigmented moles that are removed for cosmetic purposes must be sent for pathology testing.  You should not allow anyone to remove moles without first having a diagnosis. Dr Shadi is capable of diagnosing and referring to plastic surgery is required. However, most skin tags or seborrhoeic keratosis can be removed quickly and efficiently, with short healing period.

The treatment of tags is cosmetic, and skin tag removal is simple. The options include diathermy or burning, cryotherapy or freezing. They are harmless benign lesions and do not require pathology assessment after excision. (Except if skin tag occurs in a child.)

Small Skin Tag Removal

A very small skin tag can be removed with freezing. This stings momentarily, you may expect a blister, redness and then the lesion will go through healing.

Large Skin Tag Removal

Larger skin tags greater than a couple of mm, have a broader base and surgical removal under local anaesthetic is usually the best way to remove without bleeding.  Then either the base can be snipped or a diathermy or radio frequency shave is used to excise the base.

You will end up with a shallow sore, that will need to be covered to heal, but gives a good chance of preventing recurrence.

The Ellman Surgitron with radiofrequency shave is excellent to remove both small skin and large skin tags.

Skin Tag Removal is considered Cosmetic so removal of these harmless lesions is not covered by Medicare.

How Much Does Skin Tag Removal Cost?

For removal of 1-5 skin tags is $299, for 5-10 $450 and between 10- 20 $550

For very small lesions this will be less, for lesions on the face the cost is more. ,

Don’t Try to Get Rid of Skin Tags at Home

There are many sites on the internet that have recommendations for removal of skin tags at home. They fall into two camps:

cutting – bleeding most likely will not work as you will not get the root of the skin tag. small risk of infection and pain, but otherwise if you are game you can give it a try.

tying off with dental floss or other fine thread. sometimes this will work, but you will need to go through a period of inflammation and pain, not likely to have an impact on larger skin tags.

applying cider vinegar, tea tree oil – although harmless it will not work as you need to physically remove it. No harm in trying, although can cause irritation and redness.

What other sorts of skin growths can look like skin tags?

seborrheic keratoses and neurofibromas. Both of these are benign skin conditions that can mimic skin tags. The good news is both of these can be treated in the same way as skin tag removal
