Laser pigmentation removal is an effective treatment to restore an evener skin tone. There is an array of options depending on the type of pigmentation, skin type and condition of the surrounding skin. Lasers are an excellent first choice for treatment of most types of pigmentation. Sometimes used in combination with pigmentation creams, chemical peels & IPL.  Skin pigmentation treatment depends on what is causing the excess pigment.

There are an array of conditions that result in dark spots on the skin, from hormones to sun damage, skin trauma & birthmarks.   Sun damage causes freckles, age spots, liver spots and melasma. Skin trauma results in post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Laser Pigmentation Removal

Skin pigmentation treatment depends on the cause (diagnosis ) of the pigmentation and to a lesser extent where on the body it occurs. Most excess skin pigment in Brisbane is from sun damage, either directly or indirectly.  Melasma is caused by a combination of hormones and sun exposure. Sun damage responds well to laser pigmentation removal. Whereas melasma and post-inflammatory condition require pigmentation creams in addition to Picosecond lasers.

Skin Pigmentation Treatment with Sun Damage

A tan does not mean healthy skin. The dark discolouration of the skin as a result of the sun is a sign of skin damage. This is most recognisable as age spots, liver spots or freckles and is permanent alterations to the skin’s appearance. Laser pigmentation removal is useful for skin types 1 to 4. Laser and IPL are sometimes put under the same umbrella, like skin pigmentation treatment.

IPL or a photo facial is useful for skin discolouration in across red and brown hues. Therefore it can treat a spectrum of skin changes. Laser pigmentation removal can include specific pigment lasers that act superficially to remove the brown marks or a deeper laser such as CO2 laser resurfacing. If sun damage is extensive and skin discolouration is combined with fine lines and wrinkles CO2 laser provides a better treatment option. The newest laser for pigmentation Picosecond lasers. The first of these the Picosure was introduced for laser tattoo removal as well as pigmentation removal for all skin types.

Alternatives to Laser Pigmentation Removal

Apart from laser pigmentation removal, medical grade peels and skin lightening creams can be used in combination or alone for pigmentation removal. These treatments will all help to various degrees with textural concerns as well.

Other Causes Of Pigmentation Changes

Other leading causes of changes to skin colour is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and melasma. Melasma is caused by a combination of hormones and sun. It can occur in women when they go on the pill when they become pregnant and can happen in men though this is rarer. Treatment of melasma focuses on hydroquinone cream and peels. Though laser and IPL can be considered for resistant melasma.

Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation arises in people with darker skin types (Fitzpatrick 4, 5, 6) or particular ethnic background such as Asian. The hyperpigmentation is an inflammatory reaction to some form of trauma.

The injury can be physical, chemical, solar (excessive sun ) or burns from light and laser treatment, or after infections (such as acne). Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation presents as an increase in pigment which can have brown to purplish red hues.

Post-Inflammatory Pigmentation Treatment

A lot of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation will settle on its own. The resolution can take several months, so many people elect to intervene with prescription treatments including hydroquinone cream. The most important factor is to prevent further inflammation while resolution occurs. Avoid sun exposure, by wearing sunscreen. Do not treat this type of pigment with laser pigmentation treatment or IPL. Avoid skin care ingredients that cause inflammation. Pigmentation From

Age spots appear as small brown spots on the skin, they vary in size. They commonly occur on sun-exposed areas the face, hands shoulder and arms. The medical name for age spots is solar lentigines.
