Hair Loss In Men & Women

Hair loss affects men and women and results in loss of confidence and esteem. Treating hair loss as soon as it is detected, provides the best chance of halting thinning, regrowing hair that has been lost and increasing the thickness of this hair. Most hair loss is genetic, with significant relation to the AR gene, a gene which causes DHT (dihydrotestosterone) to attack hair follicles, stunting hair growth and risk of permanent hair loss.

50% of men experience hair loss by the age of 50. Of these. (99% of males with AR genes lose their hair) 60% of women experience hair loss. 45% of this is genetic while the remainder is due to medical or environmental factors. Hypothyroidism, stress, medications, age and nutrition play a significant role in women.

Hair Regrowth Treatment

Hair regrowth treatment is possible if started early and these include PRP therapy for hair loss, LED light therapy, topical solutions and medications. PRP stops the progression of hair loss and increases the thickness of hair. Once baldness has developed, regrowth is not feasible, and options are restricted to cosmetic treatments such as scalp micropigmentation or hair transplant.

Before & After PRP Treatment

PRP For Hair Loss

PRP is a low-risk treatment for early hair loss that utilises your own plasma to kick-start hair growth. PRP hair loss treatment has moderate efficacy and costs less than hair transplant surgery. It works for both male and female pattern hair loss. The earlier it is started, the better the outcome.  PRP for hair loss is not effective in 100% of cases, though the reason for this is not understood. But when it does work there can be spectacular hair restoration.
1. PRP for hair loss stops the progression of baldness by prolonging the growth cycle.
2. PRP hair treatment reactivates dormant hair follicles.
3. Thicker hair replaces shedding thinner hair.

Used early it a non-surgical alternative for men and women with hair thinning. There are limitations to hair transplant surgery, so it is important to maintain and stabilise hair growth and slow down the progression of loss in early stages with PRP hair treatment.

What Is PRP Hair Treatment?

PRP is a preparation of concentrated platelets. (Called platelet rich plasma) and works by the release of growth factors into the skin.  Platelet rich plasma was first used in the cosmetic field for treatment of acne scarring and wrinkles. But this treatment is used widely now for not only hair restoration but also in a wide range of medical treatments.

  • The platelets are obtained from a blood sample, taken immediately before treatment.
  • The blood is centrifuged to obtain a platelet concentrate called platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
  • On activation, the platelets release numerous growth factors (including IGF, EGF).
  • Activation occurs naturally on injection into the skin or with the addition of calcium chloride to the plasma.

PRP Hair Treatment – What Is Involved?

  • Before PRP hair treatment the area must be sufficiently numbed.
  • A topical anaesthetic is applied 1 hour before treatment.
  • The area to be injected is cleaned with medical antiseptic.
  • PRP for hair treatment is injected into your scalp this allows a very accurate depth of penetration and improves the outcome of PRP hair restoration.

How Many PRP for Hair Loss Sessions Will I Require?

  • Four treatments in total are recommended, repeated every two weeks.
  • Research has shown a significant reduction in hair loss and high satisfaction with the treatment outcome after a cycle of treatments.

Generally, 50 threads would be placed – $1999.

Diagnosis before PRP Injections for Hair Loss

PRP will only work with male and female pattern baldness, so obtaining a correct diagnosis is important to develop a proper approach. The majority of hair loss in men is male pattern baldness, and nearly 50% of women is female pattern hair loss. It is essential to treat underlying medical conditions. Early PRP injections for hair loss is more effective, so it is important to seek help as soon as you notice a thinning or receding hairline.

There is no baldness cure, once the head is bald treatment can include cosmetic options such as scalp micropigmentation (hair tattoo) or a surgical solution such as hair transplant surgery. Other cosmetic solutions include hair pieces and wigs or embracing baldness with a shave.

Laser Light Therapy to Regrow Hair

Laser hair therapy is a hair loss treatment for men and women. It is not a laser but phototherapy of LED light therapy. Low-level light (LLL) treatment for hair regrowth was a serendipitous discovery and has gained a significant place in regrowing hair in the early stages of thinning. Laser hair therapy works in to transform small vellus hair into terminal hair follicles, increasing the density, colour and thickness of hair.

Laser hair treatment uses infrared light to upregulate HGF (a growth factor in the scalp) which results in an increasing number of anagen hair follicles with a decrease in inflammatory infiltrates.

PDO Threads for Hair Loss

Recently introduced to Australia, PDO threads are better known as the Korean Facelift or V Lift. Studies have not commenced on single treatment placement of PDO threads into the dermis and showing positive results. We are now offering PDO Threads as an alternative or adjunctive treatment to PRP injections for hair loss.

Hair Loss Treatment in Women

Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) or androgenic alopecia is the most common cause of hair loss in women. It is important to exclude underlying medical conditions before treating hair loss in women. Hair loss in women is less clearly understood and because it is less studied than male androgenic alopecia what treatments are effective are less clear.

PRP injections are an effective hair loss treatment in women, shown to increase hair density and slow hair loss. It is a lower cost and less complicated that hair transplant. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28503741 .Studies have confirmed the effectiveness of Minoxidil promising early results for Low-Level Light Therapy. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27225981 Finasteride does not work in women.

Other Treatments For Hair Loss

Light Therapy for Hair Loss

The wavelengths of light include red light and infrared light, 655 nm and 780 nm. This therapy only works in the early stages of thinning, so when you first notice receding hairline start. We always combine the PRP treatments with light therapy, topical and oral therapies can be added.

Medications for Hair Loss

1. Minoxidil 2% is a topical medication for male and female pattern baldness available over the counter.; it is rubbed into the scalp directly at areas of thinning twice per day. It is effective in a percentage of men, and it is best started early. It is not useful for other forms of hair loss. At SkinRevision we also provide compounded scripts for stronger 5-8% minoxidil combined with retinoic acid and caffeine. Treatment takes 12 weeks to be noticeable.
Side effects include scalp irritation and oiliness of hair or a contact allergic reaction. Minoxidil must be used continuously as once you stop all of the hair is susceptible to lose again.
2. Finasteride is a prescription treatment for male-pattern baldness. It takes six weeks to see results. Finasteride is a DHT blocker that decreases new hair loss and can cause some regrowth. 85% of men stop losing hair while taking finasteride but it can affect sex drive, fertility or cause impotence. When you stop taking finasteride hair loss resumes.

3. Corticosteroids injections are used for alopecia areata patches, this and oral medication for alopecia totalis or universalis are prescribed by a dermatologist.

Topical Hair Thickeners or Hair Fibres

There are several hair thickeners available in Australia. Made of keratin protein charged with static electricity they merge with your thinning hair to create a cosmetic appearance of thicker hair. Toppik hair fibres are available at Price Line and create and immediate camouflaging effect.

Hair Transplant

Hair transplants are performed under local anaesthesia. Healthy hair follicles are obtained from donor sites at the back and side of the head. It is a highly specialised and lengthy procedure which may require more than one session. The techniques used include FUE or FUT. FUE is newer with small punch plug less than 1mm being transplanted into the bald sections, rather the older FUT which requires. Risks include failure, dissatisfaction with the density of hair regrowth, injections and scarring. We can provide a referral to a specialist in hair transplant surgery.

Limitations of hair transplant surgery include the level of satisfaction with treatment. More than half of people completing hair transplant surgery are not satisfied with the density of hair. Limited by the zone for donor hair which is the narrow band at the back of the head. So starting early with treatments like PRP which regrow hair becomes vital.

No Hair Loss Treatment or Embracing Baldness

It has become fashionable to embrace baldness by shaving of your head. The stubble does grow back. Scalp micropigmentation can play an enormous role in normalising. A shaved head with the bald spot tattooed back in to look like your natural hair looks fantastic.

Helmets For Hair Regrowth

Based on low-level light therapy, not proven.

Hair Loss Shampoo

No shampoo will regrow hair. However, some shampoos can damage hair and lead to increased hair loss.

Needling for Hair Loss

Microneedling has been reported to help stimulate hair growth. The effectiveness of needling is limited and based on observation. When the scalp is traumatised with either roller or Dermapen, it triggers a healing response which can stimulate short fine hairs or micro-vellus. Vellus hair does not continuously grow like terminal hair, so this vellus hair growth does not last very long.

The use of hair rollers at home does show some benefits with an increase in vellus hair, but this needs to be performed continuously. There is some risk that needling may also break hair, or cause inflammation which could induce hair shedding. It is however not likely to result in damage to the follicle.

Hair Growth Cycle

There are three stages of hair growth anagen, catagen and telogen. All hairs on body and head will go through its cycle.

Anagen phase the growth phase lasts 2-6 years. During this period the hair grows, with cells in the papilla dividing to produce new hair fibres. The longer the anagen lasts, the longer your hair can grow. In healthy hair, 85% of the hairs on your head are in the growth phase at any one time.

Catagen phase is a transition from hair growth to resting (telogen). Catagen lasts two weeks, the hair follicle shrinks (up to 1/6 its length) and the hair detaches itself from the papilla and its blood supply. The hair is no longer growing, but the shaft continues to push out as the follicle shrinks.

Telogen phase is a resting period lasting one to four months. At any one time, 10-15% of hairs on the healthy scalp is in this dormant stage. At some point, a new follicle begins to grow, and the old hair is shed. Within two weeks a new hair shaft starts to emerge.
