CO2 laser must be used with great care in darker skin types. However radiofrequency microneedling is safe for treating all skin types, as well as proving more effective for deep dermal rejuvenation required for some acne scars and sun damaged skin. CO2 Laser Works Full Thickness
When applied to the skin a CO2 laser creates controlled damage through the full thickness of the skin. The full thickness injury is beneficial because it establishes collagen contraction and skin tightening. It is the coagulation of the dermal tissue that stimulates your skin to mount a repair. Laying down healthy collagen and because the injury is fractionated, only part of the skin is affected. Leaving healthy skin intact speeds the healing. Healing can still take over a week, and fractionated CO2 lasers are not safe for darker skin types.
Radiofrequency Microneedling Works in Dermis
With radiofrequency microneedling, needles are inserted into the skin before radiofrequency energy is discharged. Consequently, the surface of the skin only receives microneedle pricks. The injury to break down scars or damaged tissue occurs at the needle tip (under the skin) This allows more effective treatment deeper where it is required. A CO2 laser is a gas laser (carbon dioxide) and the first laser developed and used for resurfacing. The first laser treatments where fully ablative, meaning all of the surface skin was treated. Full laser skin resurfacing potentially had terrific outcomes. However, the incidence of side effects was the impetus for developing fractional lasers bout 15 years ago. The first fractionated technology was Fraxel laser. Fraxel has continued to create new machines including a Fraxel CO2 laser. They were the first with the most prominent brand penetration, so much so that people have come to describe Fraxel as synonymous with fractionated lasers. However, there is now a broad range of fractionated CO2 lasers. Most of these are more powerful and also cheaper to deliver that the Fraxel Co2.
