Jaw Slimming | Treat a Square Jaw or Bruxism with Anti-wrinkle Injections.

Face slimming with anti-wrinkle injections is used to change your facial shape from a square jaw into a more oval or heart shape. Treating a square jaw without surgery involves injections into the masseter muscles. As well as addressing a square jaw, the muscle-relaxing injections also treat bruxism.

Injections For Square Jaw and Face Slimming

The shape of the lower face can become square from overdeveloped muscles. This is a common genetic feature in some Asian ethnic origins or from teeth clenching or grinding known as bruxism.

It is of more concern for women as an oval face rather than square is recognised as more feminine. Squareness of the jaw when it becomes excessive can be treated with injections of muscle relaxants into the masseter muscles to create a slimming of the lower face and softening of the jawline.

Men seek this treatment when they have teeth grinding causing headaches that have not been relieved with more traditional therapies.

What Is Bruxism?

Bruxism is the medical name for teeth grinding or clenching. It commonly occurs at night time when you sleep. Bruxism can be caused or worsened by stress and anxiety. However, the most common underlying cause is unevenness in your mouth bite.

The bruxism is often detected by your partner, or from headaches, face or TMJ (temporal-mandibular joint pain) in the day. If left untreated it can result in worn teeth, disrupted sleep and recurrent headaches, as well as increased squareness of the jaw.

Other Methods For Correcting Teeth Grinding

Correcting the underlying bite problem or use of dental guards are two other common ways to relieve the bruxism and symptoms. However, correcting the teeth grinding will not slim the jaw or change the facial shape.

All our Doctors offer injections to treat square jaw for face slimming as well as treatment to ease bruxism and teeth grinding.

Smile Lines or Laugh Lines and Face Lines

[caption id="attachment_9966" align="alignright" width="563"] Radiofrequency skin resurfacing with Profound. *results are individual[/caption]

Smile lines are also called laugh lines, cheek, accordion or merely face lines. Non-surgical treatment options include fillers and skin tightening. However, there are limitations with smile line fillers. If there is excessive skin laxity a thread or facelift is required for optimal results.

How do Smile Lines Form?

Smile lines or cheek lines develop naturally over time from a combination of muscle movement, skin laxity and facial volume loss.

Skin laxity occurs from sun exposure and natural ageing. Sun damage causes damage to elastin and depletion of Collagen and hyaluronic acid. Couple this with loss of fat volume and descent of fat pads there is a bunching of excess skin in the mid and lower face.

Lines on Cheek When You Smile?

The smile lines form because of the movement of smiling, causing the skin to crinkle out from the mouth. (This is why laugh lines are also called accordion lines.) Occur naturally over time from changes that occur to the face with repeated movement.

Treatment of Face Lines with Smile Line Fillers

Dermal fillers can be used to restore new volume to deeper layers of skin lessening the appearance of lines on your cheek when you smile. Smile line fillers are generally thicker fillers placed deeply. However thin fillers placed superficially also provide improvement.

If the face lines are more advanced or occur in areas other than the face other treatments may be more appropriate for your concern. These include anti-wrinkle injections or skin resurfacing with laser, radiofrequency or ultrasound.

With advanced skin laxity and sagging, treatment with Thread Lift or Facelift is the only option.

What Causes Wrinkles And How To Prevent Them.

There is a range of factors that contribute to skin ageing that is necessary to understand. Altering these factors can prevent and reduce not only wrinkles but the textural, tonal and colour changes of skin ageing. So what causes wrinkles?

The principal causes of wrinkle formation are sun damage, free radical damage & inflammation in the skin from diet, stress and skin irritants.

1. Sun Damage & Wrinkle Formation.

Ultraviolet radiation is the principal cause of facial aging and wrinkles. These harmful rays:

  • break down collagen and elastin fibres
  • damage cell DNA
  • generate free radicals
  • deplete the skin of antioxidants
  • lower the immunity of the skin
  • create inflammation

Cumulatively over the years, damage leads to wrinkling formation, pigmentation, changes to the skin texture and tone, surface capillaries, enlarging pores and potentially skin cancers.

2. Free radicals and wrinkles.

Free radicals are unstable molecules that are produced by our body cells every day as an integral part of providing energy for their survival. Once formed, these unstable molecules set off a cascade of destruction, called ‘free radical damage’: potentially damaging vital cell structures and triggering an inflammatory response.

  • Sunlight, cigarette smoke and pollution speed up the free-radical formation.
  • Free radical damage is a significant contributor to wrinkle formation as well as cancer, heart and degenerative diseases.

Anti- Oxidants Essential To Stop Free Radical Damage

Anti-oxidants are a diverse group of substances (found in the food we eat, products we put on our skin and produced by the body) that block free radical damage.

Antioxidants have anti-aging, anti-wrinkle and UV protection benefits. It is best to eat anti-oxidant rich foods and to put a mix of antioxidants on your skin each day for optimum protection.

3. Smoking Speeds Up Skin Aging.

A great reason to give up smoking it causes:

  • Increased wrinkle formation.
  • Yellow, irregular thickening of the skin.
  • Increase in grey hair.
  • And all of these effects are more pronounced in women than men!

3. Sugar Causes Wrinkles.

As well as contributing to diabetes, heart disease and a host of degenerative diseases SUGAR, and other high GI carbohydrates are significant contributors to wrinkle formation.

To be used as fuel in the body, these carbohydrates are broken down to glucose. Glucose in excess in the body binds to proteins- a process known as glycation. These glycated proteins thus form bridges between themselves, so instead of smaller flexible proteins you have stiff, inflexible structures, causing hardening of the arteries, and you guessed it wrinkles.

Excess sugar=glycalation=AGE = wrinkles

The end products of glycation – or Advanced Glycation End-products – are known as AGE for short. As it happens, AGE is what they do to our bodies and our looks.

4. Stress and wrinkles.

Stress in the body both physical and emotional cause changes to our hormonal system, adversely ageing by increasing inflammation at a cellular level.

In modern life, we are subjected to enormous amounts of mental stress with prolonged periods of elevated stress hormones, which cause inflammation, damage and premature ageing.

5. Air Pollution

Speeds up ageing by producing free radicals in the skin. In large amounts, free radicals damage cell membranes and interact with the genetic material. Free radicals contribute to the formation of wrinkles and other skin disorders.

5. Skin Irritants & Inflammation

It is well recognised that repeated small insults on the skin in the way of physical trauma, skin diseases and chemical trauma cause inflammation. Imperfect healing of this injury accumulates to increase ageing of the skin and wrinkle formation.

Many skin products contain ingredients that are known skin irritants. Alcohol, fragrances and essential oils added for fragrant qualities such as menthol, eucalyptus and citrus oils are all highly irritating for the skin.

Like sun damage, the impact of these may not be immediately visible, although some people develop instant breakouts, or allergy reactions, many people, have a micro-inflammation that cumulatively over time increased ageing of the skin.

In summary the answer to the question ‘what causes wrinkles?’ is multifactorial. However, there are measures to prevent them and treatments including anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers once they have formed.

    redirectedMelasma Treatment

Melasma treatment requires a combination of treatments.

    What Is Melasma?

Melasma is a skin pigmentation that appears as map like brown patches. It occurs most commonly on the forehead. It can also occur on the upper lip, cheeks and other face areas. Melasma is difficult to treat and requires persistence. The aim melasma treatment is to reduce it so it to a cosmetically acceptable level.

    Quick Facts
Melasma is caused by a combination of oestrogen + sun exposure.

    • The oestrogen changes the way skin pigment responds to sun exposure.
    • Contraceptive pills can worsen melasma
    • Effective sun protection is ESSENTIAL.
    • Prescription lightening agents and superficial chemical peels can be used.
    • There are some lasers appropriate for treatment of melasma, however these are not without risks.
    • it is best to trial topical treatments initially.
    • Inappropriate treatment with IPL, lasers, deep chemical peels can worsen melasma.

    Melasma Treatment

Step 1. Avoid the factors that cause Melasma

    • Sunscreen and sun protection.
    • Discuss changing OCP with your General Practitioner. It is not always possible to change but this gives melasma the best chance to settle.

Step 2 – Decrease new melanin production.

The essential ingredients include Vitamin A PLUS Hydroquinone 4%.
Even with a strong creams, it still takes up to 4 weeks to notice fading.

    Step 3 – Remove pigmentation

Clearing pigmentation from the skin with Chemical peels or Fractional Laser.

    • Chemical peels clear melasma by exfoliation of the excess pigment.
    • 10- 20% Lactic acid peels or Vitamin A peels.
    • Chemical Peels are performed every 2 to 4 weeks and are well tolerated.
    • There is no downtime with this type of peeling.

Fractionated treatments can give excellent results in resistant cases of melasma. Usually 2-6 treatments are needed. Laser treatment is NEVER the first line treatment of melasma, and should be reserved for cases where other treatments have failed. There can be complications of worsening of pigmentation in some cases.

Step 4 – Prevention of melasma

The last step of melasma treatment is to prevent the melasma returning.

    • Ongoing sun protection is essential
    • 2% hydroquinone or niacinamide over the hot summer months.
    • Melasma is never cured so you may need to consider intermittent treatment.

Broken capillaries is a term used to describe capillaries that become visible on the skin surface. They are caused from sun exposure, rosacea and aging. In Brisbane our high sun exposure places us at risk of developing broken capillaries and redness not only of the nose and face but also neck and chest.

Intense pulsed light treatment – IPL is used for broken capillaries but vascular lasers, diathermy or injections may be used depending on the size of the vessel.

The Difference Between Lasers And IPL For Broken Capillaries

IPL uses a broad spectrum of visible light while lasers use a single wavelength of light. This means IPL is suited to treat combinations of sun damage problems, diffuse redness, broken capillaries and pigmentation can be treated simultaneously.

Lasers are more precise but less versatile and more appropriate for larger isolated capillaries. Combinations of treatments can be used.

    redirectedSun Damage

Sun damage is the primary cause of wrinkling and facial ageing. This damage is cumulative: even small doses add up weekly, monthly, yearly to premature ageing. UV radiation from the sun damages collagen and elastin causes free radical production and skin inflammation and makes your skin cells behave abnormally.

    •  Cell turnover decreases causing a build-up of dead compacted skin cells.
    • The skin becomes duller, loses its youthful glow and becomes coarser and rougher.
    • Reduced collagen and damaged elastin result in fine lines and wrinkles and sagging of the skin.
    • Sun damage also causes abnormal pigmentation with clumps of pigment discolouring the surface

Skin Care Essentials To Treat Sun Damage & Ageing

    1. SPF 30+ SUNSCREEN
    2. Prescription retinoids can reverse photo ageing to give a more youthful appearance.

    • Retinoids increase cell turnover, decrease the build-up of dead compacted cells giving the skin a more youthful glow and smoother surface.
    • They stimulate collagen production and repair elastin to reduce the depth of wrinkles.
    • They decrease skin pigmentation to give a more even skin colour.

    Genetics And Sun Damage

Looking at your parents and grandparents will tell you how your skin will age. Some people because of skin colour and other genetic factors are less vulnerable to sun damage and wrinkle formation.
Tip: no matter how good your genetics sun protection is essential to retard the progression of ageing.

No miracle ingredient will make sun damage & wrinkles disappear.

If you want to prevent and treat wrinkles, there are skin products and prescription treatments that will help with skin health and retard the progression of ageing. Other important factors are a healthy diet, sun protection, cessation of smoking.

    Looking At Your Hands

When we think about the signs of ageing, most of us think first about our faces. However, one of the earliest signs of ageing is our hands. Hand aging is marked with loss of fatty tissue, increased visibility of veins, tendons, age spots and hand wrinkling.

    Aging Hand Treatments

Dermal fillers replace volume which helps disguise the veins and tendons and decrease hand wrinkles. Laser, IPL and peels can help reduce the appearance of age spots and improve the skin texture.
