Spider Vein Treatment

Spider veins on the leg (also called thread veins) and are a common cosmetic concern and can be treated with sclerotherapy.

What Causes Spider Veins On The Legs?

A spider vein may appear as a red or blue discolouration or in clusters to give a typical spidery appearance.

  • Hormonal factors contribute to spider veins and can occur during pregnancy or hormone replacement.
  • There tends to be a family history.
  • Sometimes specific trauma to an area can cause a spider vein to occur.
  • Treatment Of Spider Veins

Treatment of spider veins involves injecting a sclerosing solution into the vessel. The sclerosant causes irritation to the vessel, causing it to shrink.

  • The treatment does cause discomfort and stinging.
  • A series of treatments can be required.
  • What Happens After The Treatment

The veins will fade over coming weeks, however after care is important.

  • Support stocking need to be applied after treatment.
  • Sometimes there can be a discolouration at the site of injection that persists in the area for up to 6 months.
  • Ulceration can also occur from the sclerosant and requires a time to heal.
  • Further treatments are generally scheduled for one month if required.
  • Because of the predisposition new spider veins may appear and repeat treatments may be required, ie you will need to look at top up treatments to keep the veins under control.
