Skin Needling is a treatment option for depressed Acne Scars. This treatment involves use of a skin roller to create multiple punctures into the skin. This controlled injury attempts to stimulate collagen growth under the area of scarring with the aim of improving the surface appearance of the skin.
Skin needling will not eliminate acne scars entirely but a treatment course with skin needling can improve the cosmetic appearance of the skin.

Hi,
I have a bit of acne scarring around my chin. I am quite interested in learning a little more about your needling treatment. How long does it take and how many treatments? Is is painful? What does it cost?
Please reply via email..
Thanks
Hi Jenna,
1.Needling for acne scars takes about 15-30 minutes, however you do need to sit around with anaesthetic cream for about one hour before hand to make the treatment more comfortable.
2. We recommend a series of 6 treatments. The degree of improvement is individual.
3. The cost of needling depends on the area of acne scarring but you are generally looking at about $350 per treatment.
It is best to come in for an assessment so we can discuss your treatment options and go through what the process involves. There is no obligation with the assessment. Call us on 33505447 if you wish to book a free consultation.
Can this procedure be done while still taking roaccutane?
I’ve been taking it for years, every time i stop, cystic acne comes back… so i basically take 1-2 caps per week which keeps it at bay.
my face has no acne, no redness, its been years since i had any cysts…. so can i still undertake this procedure? what are the costs?
regards,
Hi Khaalid, Generally no skin treatments are performed while you are on Roaccutane, it would be best to discuss it with the Dermalologist who is prescribing it.
Hi,
For optimum results 6 treatments are required over 6 months. Does the collagen last for a year after the last treatment in the cycle?
Also do you have to return for future treatments (after last treatment in 6 month cycle)? Does the collagen wear off in the long run and if not continued the skin will return to original state?
Thanks
Hi Russell, the needling for acne scars can be spaced further apart than monthly, in fact many doctors have longer treatment intervals, we find we get a speeded repair doing the treatments at monthly intervals, and for people who have acne scars like to see an improvement quickly.
The collagen that is laid down from the needling is part of the normal healthy skin collagen. And as such the treatment effect does not wear off, but the process of aging we loose collagen from our skin normally. So if you think of it as a top up of collagen levels, so you are always further ahead than if you do not have the needling performed. Whether you get future treatments is up to you. The needling we have done on people with acne scars we do not tend to recommend a top up.
After a good clinical response to needling, no your skin will never return to its original state, subsequent collagen loss occurs at the normal rate of aging.
Hi Sebastian, having previous laser treatment and jaw surgery do not stop you from having skin needling, we would have to assess your skin to be sure, but needling can still be done after laser. MTS is a type of dermal roller, and yes it is the same treatment basis, it is also called facial mesotherapy or collagen induction therapy. We currently use the clear skin care dermal rollers, but there are several on the market that are appropriate for needling acne scars.
If you still have acne at the time, can you get the needling done or do you need your skin to have cleared up?
Hi Kylie, yes it is best to get your acne settled before you get skin needling done. In saying this if it is just an occasional breakout, this is fine to have the skin needling, but if it is really out of control then you need to get it settled. We do a lot of treatments for acne. So if you wanted to book a medical consultation with one of our Doctors we can work to get the acne settled first and then proceed with the skin needling to repair the acne scars. Call us on 33505447 if you wish to book a consultation for acne treatment.
please let me know where does this situated in brisbane.
Hi Jo,
Just wondering with the ‘down time’ you say 2 days is this correct? Are you still able to work in these 2 days or is it best to have this time off work?
Regards
Catherine
Hi Catherine, with skin needling you can go back to work the next day. The skin will be sealed and there will be residual reddness, but putting on a good mineral makeup no will notice. By the second day, generally no one will even know you have had anything done on the surface. The only limiitation is being able to disguise the reddness. regards Jo

Hi Izzy, I do not know Doctors in your area, as I am based in Brisbane Australia. The best thing is to do a google search in your local area to look for Doctors who treat chicken pox scar, or even just search for scar removal or skin needling with LA in the search. I hope you find someone to help, as we know from the treatments we provide how distressing it can be to have scars that you feel self conscious about. I am sorry I could not be of greater help. regards Jo
Hi Jo,
Is it necessary to have a GP referral letter or to see a dermatologist prior to making an appointment?’
Regards,
Jaime
Hi Jaime, No you do not need a GP referral to see us for needling of acne scars. Our clinic is a cosmetic clinic and our staff are Cosmetic Physicians and Cosmetic Nurses. Our initial assessment is free and if you want an appointment just call us on 33505447. regards Jo
I am starting to get wrinkles on my upper lip. Would skin needling be the most effective treatment to greatly reduce these wrinkles?
Hi Kylie, skin needling can help reduce wrinkles on the upper lip, however usually some form of dermal filler is the best approach. The best thing is to come in for a free assessment, when we see what is happening with the skin and muscle movement we will be able to recommend the best course of action. There is no obligation with this so call us on 33505447 to book a complimentary assessment at the outset. regards Jo
Hi
I don’t have acne scars but i do have a scar, it’s not a very major one at all it’s a normal flat one but obviously it’s not level with the skin. You see in about September 20th or so i picked of my beauty spot or mole it’s very small and quite flat and the mole grew back within 2 weeks or less but it was red and now it looks like it’s scarred but it’s not very visible but it just makes me so sad and i just wanted to ask because the area is so small and not deep would i need more than one treatment and are the results permanent, i don’t think i would loose the collagen of old age because i’m only 14. So basically after say if i have the two treatments will the results last forever and will it not go back to the way it was before, is the collagen only temporary?
thanks
Hi there,
I am just wondering if you can use retin a at the same time as getting needling done ? Kind regards, alice
Hi Alice, Yes we recommend using tretinoin with the skin needling. As the tretinoin also stimulates collagen production in the skin the tretinoin improves the outcome of skin needling. regards Jo
Hi there,
Another question-
does needling help with pigmentation also?
Thanks
Hi Jaime, quite often needling and the prescription creams we use to treat acnes scarring can help with pigmentation, however this does depend on the type of pigmentation and we would need to see you to assess the type of pigmentation before we could say for certain. The best thing is to book a free assessment at the outset. There is no obligation with this so call us on 33505447 to book a free consultation at the outset. regards Dr Jo
Hi Dr Jo,
I have a couple of questions for you. I am 30 years old and have developed pretty bad acne over the last few years resulting in scarring. I have been researching on the net, looking for ways I might be able to improve the scars and needling sounds like it might be a good option for me (once a have managed to get the active acne to settle!!). I was just wondering… does needling help with patchy reddish discolouration as well as the depressions in the skin? (I have red marks all over my face). From reading your information above and the other comments it sounds like needling may also help improve wrinkles and general skin texture too. I am also beginning to get a crepey texture to the skin on my upper eyelids and am wondering if needling might be a suitable treatment to improve this too? I have read that some types of fractional laser might improve the skin texture around the eyes but am a bit worried about the potential dangers of treatment of this delicate skin. If it is appropriate, would needling be safer? Any advice would be appreciated.
Regards,
Cath
Hi Cath, The needling does help with the reddish discolouration as well as the depressed scars and yes as it stimulates collagen it can also help with fine lines and wrinkles and general skin texture. We also have a new treatment call PRP with which we have been getting fantastic results for both skin texture and scarring. Our Dr Ansulette specialises in acne treatment and also does the acne scar treatment so it would be best to book in with her to get your acne settled first then look at treating the scarring. There is a consultation fee of $65 for the acne assesment (which you get over half back on medicare), but it is well worth getting a descent acne treatment plan together first. The best thing is to call us on 33505447 to book a consultation with Dr Ansulette. regards Dr Jo
Hello My name is james and I am 18 years old and I have been suffering from acne for about 4 years or so, Although get acne it is not at a very bad level , so I can keep yhis under control the thing i was wondering is do you have anytreatments for acne scarring as this is what I feel is holding me back in life.
Also does the treatment cost $175-$330 everytime you get the treatment done or is it for the 6 treatments?
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Sincerely,
Josh
Hi James, The cost is per treatment and yes it is done 6 times. We also have a newer treatment PRP that we are using for acne scarring as well. The best thing is to come in for a consultation if you are interested in the skin needling. We will assess you skin, be able to explain the whole process as well as give an accurate quote. Dr Jo
Hi Juan, it is not likely to have done any harm, however we do not advise touching the skin after skin needling for acne scarring because of risk of infection. Also you must avoid sun exposure after skin needling, well it is best to avoid sun exposure altogether, however after any cosmetic procedure it is advised to wear a good sun block and avoid sun for several weeks, as it can cause problems. I hope this has been of help. regards Dr Jo
