Freckles are caused from accumulation of pigmentation in skin cells from sun damage in childhood. Ongoing sun protection is essential to ensure that there is no further damage to the skin which will cause freckles to darken.
The appearance of freckles can be lessened with a light based therapy such as laser treatment or intense pulsed light. Intense pulsed light therapy results in a progressive return to a more even and very natural skin tone although total removal seldom occurs.

what is the difference between an s ipl machine and a plain ipl machine thanks
Dr Joanne Turner responded on 15 Aug 2009 at 1:33 pm #
Hi Jennie,
Basically IPL is an abbreviation of ( intense pulsed light) treatment. The first Intense pulsed light machine made got a copyright or trademark on the term IPL and all Intense pulsed light machines since that time are not allowed to use the specific term IPL. As new intense pulsed light machines have come on the market they have needed to use terms like smooth intense light therapy (S-IPL) etc. To confuse matters more there is also Square intense pulsed light therapy also abbreviated to S IPL. However not all pulsed light machines are the same, there are bottom end machines that can cost around $20,000 and then high end machines that cost $100,000. The high end machines do make a difference, as they have more power and therefore are more effective and also have added safety measure such as contact cooling etc.
The terms smooth, square etc really just describe the way the light wave is delivered and does not say anything about the power or effectiveness of the machine. High end machines in Australia include Palomar and Cutera..there are hundreds of low end machines. I hope this has been of help and not confused matters further.
Our machine is a Palomar machine and has a smooth wave hence S-IPL . If you want to come in for a consultation these are free. There is not obligation with the consultation so call us on 33505447 to book a free consultation at the outset.

Hi Jade, at 14 you would need to bring your parents in for a consultation and to consent to the procedure..and yes it is quite amazing technology, the whole laser light/ intense pulsed light treatment to remove freckles and pigmentation is quite fascinating. If you are interested discuss it with your parents and have them bring you in for a consultation. regards Dr Jo Turner

Dr Joanne Turner responded on 09 Aug 2010 at 3:46 pm #
Hi Luke, we would need to see you to give an exact quote, but as a ball park figure you are looking at around $550 for treatment of arms and hands. We do free assessment consultations and we do test patch on that day and explain the process and what is involved. There is no obligation with the assessment so it is best to call us on 33505447 to book a free consultation at the outset. regards Dr Jo
Kay responded on 18 Aug 2010 at 11:42 pm #
Hi,
What would the ballpark figure be to remove some freckling on the facial cheeks area? Would it require multiple sessions? Thanks.
Dr Joanne Turner responded on 20 Aug 2010 at 11:08 am #
Hi Kay, Treatment of freckles on the cheeks would generally be $180- $220 per treatment and you are looking at 2-6 treatments spaced monthly to two monthly. When we do the assessment we may be able to be a little more accurate as to how many treatments you require. It depends on how dark the freckles are. We do need to see you to assess if you are suitable for the treatment and this consultation is free. At that time we would assess the extent of the freckles, go through what the treatment involves and do a test patch. There is no obligation with the assessment so call us on 33505447 to book a free consultation at the outset. regards Dr Jo
Jordan Searle responded on 20 Aug 2010 at 6:34 pm #
Just wondering, I’m thinking of possibly getting my arms done, neck and behind my shoulders and know roughly the costs involved. Just a few concerns regarding the procedure, I currently use a product called Melanotan which means injecting melanin to give me a tan because I’m palish, would doing the laser treatment cause me to lose the tan effect? Also how do I prevent getting the freckles back if I sun bake often?
Dr Joanne Turner responded on 23 Aug 2010 at 2:00 pm #
Hi Jordan, we cannot do IPL or laser treatment for freckle removal when you have a tan. Because the light is absorbed into the tan or the skin as well as the freckle it does risk burning, so we would not advise this. regards Dr Jo
