Local injections are the second line treatment for underarm hyperhidrosis.

Injections with a purified protein are a safe, quick and effective treatment to stop excessive sweating of the underarm. The injections, more commonly known as a wrinkle treatment, are the next option if underarm sweating fails to respond to antiperspirants.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is characterised by sweating in excess of the amount necessary to maintain normal body temperature. There are two main categories: primary and secondary hyperhidrosis.

  • Primary hyperhidrosis is usually an inherited condition that arises in childhood or teenage years.
  • Secondary hyperhidrosis is a result of an underlying medical conditions, including hormonal, neurological or skin disorders, use of certain drugs, cancer, chronic infections or excess nerve transmitter discharge.
  • It is important that you have your excessive sweating assessed to diagnose which form of hyperhidrosis affects you. The treatment of secondary hyperhidrosis involves treatment of the underlying condition.

    Treatments for primary hyperhidrosis.

Treatment of primary hyperhidrosis is split into non-surgical and surgical options.

  • Non-surgical include topical antiperspirants, local injections, Iontophoresis or medication.
  • The only viable surgical option is liposuction of armpit tissue. Sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis is not considered a reliable treatment and recent research has shown that many people have a decreased quality of life after this procedure.
  • We treat people with excessive sweating of the underarms.

Injections with a purified protein start to work within 2-5 days and can last 6-12 months. In the majority of people there will be a period of no sweating, with a lesser group achieving at least a 75-95% reduction in uncontrolled sweating. What a relief.
