Iontophoresis with tap water alone has proven very successful in the majority of people with hyperhidrosis of the hands and feet with limited use for the armpits.

How does iontophoresis stop excessive sweating?

The way iontophoresis stops excessive sweating is unknown. It is speculated the treatment causes the sweat duct to be blocked by formation of a thick plug.

  • Up to 85% of people will see the sweating ease after 4-7 treatments.
  • This will last a variable amount of time; from a few days to weeks when the treatment must be repeated.
  • This treatment can be done as many times as necessary; is safe, cheap and can be performed at home.
  • If tap water does not work alone, then a prescription medication can be added to the water.

    How is iontophoresis performed?

The hands or feet are placed in plastic baths which are filled with water and a very low electric current is turned on. The procedure is painless but the user may experiences a ‘pins and needles’ sensation in the hands or feet.

    Other treatment options.

If iontophoresis fails local injections are considered the next ‘minimally invasive’ treatment option.

Frustratingly, TGA regulations in Australia restrict naming of these injections as they are class S4 medication to be administered by a Doctor with training. They are approved for treatment of excessive sweating of the underarm and have a well established safety profile.
