Sweat is how your body cools itself and essential to life. Some facts:

  • You sweat mainly under your arms and on your feet and palms.
  • There are two main types of sweat glands eccrine and apocrine.
  • Eccrine sweat is watery and odorless
  • Apocrine sweat glands occur in the armpit and genital area. They produce a thicker liquid and when it mixes with bacteria on your skin causes body odour.

    Although sweating is normal when you exercise, are anxious, sick or the weather is hot, some people have a condition called hyperhidrosis whereby they sweat too much even without need.

    Human sweat has an antibiotic that they called dermcidin that controls infection on the skin - for example, it kills the bacteria E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and the yeast Candida albicans.

  • there are over 2 million sweat glands on a human body
  • most of these are “eccrine” sweat glands,
  • there are more sweat glands on the soles of the feet, palms, forehead, cheeks and armpits
  • This is not news to people who have excessive sweating, as the eccrine glands mostly the cause of excessive sweating.
    In people who have hyperhidrosis, the sweat glands are over sensitive and produce more sweat than is necessary.


    How do you know if you have hyperhidrosis

    The chances are that if your sweat is causing you distress you have some degree of hyperhidrosis.

    Score 1. My sweating is never noticeable and never interferes with my daily activities.
    Score 2. My sweating is tolerable but sometimes interferes with my daily activities.
    Score 3. My sweating is barely tolerable and frequently interferes with my daily activities
    Score 4. My sweating is intolerable and always interferes with my daily activities.
