Facial Rejuvenation

Facial Rejuvenation is a broad term that is commonly applied to several different treatment modalities.

Rejuvenation means to renew and what all of these treatments have in common is that you can achieve a refreshed look without surgery. Generally speaking non surgical facial rejuvenation treatments can be broken down into:

  • Treatment of wrinkles: Anti-wrinkle injections
  • Treatment for volume loss: Dermal Fillers and Non surgical facelifting treatments.
  • Treatment of pigmentation, capillaries and texture or surface skin changes: Photorejuvenation
    or IPL photorejuvenation
  • Anti-wrinkle treatments.

This is the most common and arguably the most effective cosmetic treatment performed today.

Forehead lines, eye wrinkles or crows feet and frown lines are best treated with a simple lunchtime procedure to relax the muscles and smooth the surface skin. Smoothing wrinkles in particular areas of the face gives a refreshed and younger look simply.

Volume replacement or non surgical face lifting approach.

It is not commonly realised that volume loss is the most aging process.

Flattening of cheekbones, jowl formation, naso-labial lines, marionette lines and lip wrinkles are all caused from volume loss and are best addressed with injectable fillers and non surgical face lifting treatments.

Depending on the area involved volume replacement involves plumping out lines and folds and lifting sagging caused from volume loss in the face. This can be viewed as a rejuvenation as well as preventing progression of an aged appearance.

    Skin Rejuvenation.

Pigmentation, surface capillaries, fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, skin roughening and colour changes can be treated with several different modalities variously aimed to renew skin collagen, get rid of unwanted colour changes and produce a smoother, healthier and younger skin surface.

Photorejuvenation or IPL photorejuvenation has become accepted as a means of rejuvenating the face and other parts of the body. Unlike laser rejuvenation there is no downtime and no prolonged healing. Intense pulsed light gives a progressive rejuvenation to restore a natural more even skin colour as well as creating a healthier skin quality and revitalised complexion.

Because it is so versatile it is a one stop shop to rejuvenating the surface of the skin. The results are more subtle than laser resurfacing, but because there is no downtime and the result afterward is a very natural skin appearance it is a preferred treatment for many.

    Skin Care Rejuvenation.

Though there are no miracle cures for wrinkles and sagging there are a handful of skin products that have research base to show they will reverse some aging to the skin and rejuvenate skin texture and quality. Everyone should be using active ingredients on their skin to prevent aged appearance and retard the progression of changes from aging.

I have written two articles as a guide to help you search through the quagmire that is Cosmetic Industry hype and advertising. These are worth reading before you purchase any product that promises ‘to get rid of your wrinkles”. What products do help with wrinkles AND save time on money on skin care products

  • Most of what is referred to as laser hair removal is now intense pulsed light treatment. Intense pulsed light is a laser like treatment with a broader spectrum of light. With a good power machine the results are fast, comfortable and will give permanent reduction in unwanted hair.

At SkinRevision we use the Palomar smooth intense pulsed light machines because of superior technology, ease of use and for your comfort and safety during treatment. Hair removal is affordable: treatments start at $80- $110 for facial hair and basic bikini.

Why do you need a cycle of treatments for laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal targets the pigment of the hair called melanin. The light grabs onto the pigment heats up the hair bulb, which injures or destroys it.

However when the light from the laser machine is flashed onto the skin, it will only affect hair that is in active growth phase.

At any one time, the hair in a particular part of the body will be dormant, and there will be no hair in the follicle, the light at this time will have no affect on the hair bulb as there is no hair in the follicle for it to grab onto.

Complications of laser hair removal are rare and can be eliminated if the treatment is performed by a qualified person.

Because the technology of laser hair removal is very powerful and potentially dangerous:

  • It is important that assessment of skin type be accurate
  • that any underlying pigmented lesions are properly diagnosed before treatment is undertaken
  • and that safety protocols are followed.
  • Laser Hair Removal Complications

Complications that can occur if improperly applied range from pain, swelling and redness to blistering and worse there can be scarring and skin pigmentation or depigmentation.

For this reason it is wise to spend a little time finding a good clinic and not go for the cheapest option.

    Cost of Laser Hair Removal

How much does it cost for laser hair removal?

Australians spend a lot of money on hair removal each year.

  • over $100 million yearly on razor blades
  • $30 million on waxes and hair removal creams
  • and even more on waxing at beauty clinics
  • Though the cost of a permanent solution may seem daunting to start with when we add up the amount we already spend in dollars and hours: laser hair removal suddenly becomes an attractive cost effective solution.

    Surgery Free Facelift

What can be achieved in facial rejuvenation without surgery: the answer - a lot.
Why is this option attractive to people? Because it involves no loss of work, painful downtime and healing, no surgery or anaesthetic. This is the first of a five part series on the process of a ‘facelift without surgery’.

Your Cosmetic Doctor understands the process of aging.

As the face ages, there are predictable developments that are well understood. Your cosmetic Doctor should have a thorough understanding of these and the tools in their cosmetic enhancement ‘bag of tricks’ to help you achieve a refreshed and younger looking face without surgery.

    What is a Non-surgical facelift.

A non-surgical facelift involves a series of minimally invasive treatments with little downtime. Also known as the ‘lunchtime face-lift’ because it can literally be performed over a series of lunchtimes without general anaesthesia or surgery.

It involves a systematic approach to fixing areas of concern: generally spaced over weeks or even months depending on your budget. Once women considered surgery in their 40’s now, with advancement in cosmetic medicine techniques, the need for surgery can be delayed up to a couple of decades.

The face ages in predictable ways - Cosmetic Medicine Brisbane

    Minimally invasive Cosmetic Skin Treatments

Common tools used to approach a facial rejuvenation without surgery include use of the following procedures. You will not need all of these, but a combination depending on the areas that concern you, your skin condition and other factors assessed by your Doctor:

  • Muscle relaxing injections:
for crows feet, frown lines, forehead furrows, mini-brow lifts, bunny scrunches, chin lines, neck bands and smokers lines.
  • Dermal fillers.
used for nasolabial lines, marionette lines, deep filling for early jowl formation and contouring.
  • Rejuvenation of lips with Dermal fillers:
by increasing volume, restoring the lip boarder and getting rid of smokers lines.
  • Collagen regenerating treatments:
for overall facial rejuvenation and volume filling for treating wrinkles on cheeks, nasolabial lines, wrinkles around eyes, lifting early jowls and creating more jaw line definition.
  • Laser resurfacing:
with new Fraxel laser technology for getting rid of pitting of acne scarring, melasma and other aging surface skin changes from sun damage and wrinkles without prolonged healing of traditional lasers.
  • Pigmentation and sun damage removal by Photorejuvenation with Intense Pulsed light treatments
  • How would a Cosmetic Doctor approach a non-surgical facelift?

The first step: your Doctor should ask you, “What concerns you?”. Most people have a fairly clear idea what areas of facial aging they dislike (we all have our pet hates). This is an optional process so it has to be about helping you achieve results you are happy with.

Some people present simply asking for ‘a younger looking, refreshed face’ and hand it back to the doctor for suggestions. Your cosmetic Doctor can then lend their expertise and understanding of how the years have changed the face and what tools are available to reverse these changes.

Once the assessment is complete, your Doctor will outline your options, what can realistically be achieved with each procedure and importantly how much it will cost. Together you can then come up with a plan that suits your timetable and budget to achieve a facial rejuvenation over a series of lunchtimes or after work appointments.

Tomorrow: Step 1. Muscle relaxing injections for unwanted wrinkles in upper half of face.
