Hyperhidrosis Treatment

The treatment of hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating depends on which part of the body it affects. The following summary applies to primary hyperhidrosis only. It is important that you have your excessive sweating assessed and diagnosed correctly before undertaking any treatment.

Hyperhidrosis Treatment Brisbane

Primary Hyperhidrosis Treatment Summary

1. Local Treatments

Antiperspirants for hyperhidrosis of the armpit, hands and feet. The most effective anti-perspirants for excessive sweating contain aluminum chloride. There is long acting forms such as dri chlor available. They work by by stopping the sweat reaching the surface.

Iontophoresis - used for hyperhidrosis of the hands and feet. This requires a series of treatments, usually every two days for up to 10 treatments until the sweating decreases, with an ongoing maintenance program as required.

2. New Treatments

Injections are used for treatment of hyperhidrosis of the armpit, hands and feet. More commonly used for cosmetic purposes the injections have been increasingly used to gain relief from excessive sweating. It is an effective treatment and in the armpit can give relief for 6-12 months.

3. Oral medication and surgery.

Various medications taken by mouth have been used to block the nerve receptors that signal sweat production. However they also affect all such nerve receptors in the body and all have potential side effects. They can be used in generalised hyperhidrosis but rarely indicated for excessive sweating in local areas.

Sympathectomy - Is not indicated for treatment of hyperhidrosis unless there is severe excessive sweating of the hands that does not respond to anything else. The surgery disrupts the autonomic nervous system impulses to the sweat glands. There is a risk of permanent irreversible damage and side effects and quality of life may be worse after treatment.

Liposuction of the armpit is not reliable and should only be considered after local injections have failed. Surgical excision because of scarring risk is not performed anymore.

    Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is a condition where the body’s cooling mechanism ’sweating’ is overactive.
People with hyperhidrosis sweat in cold conditions, when they are under stress and in extreme amounts: up to 5 times more than is necessary to cool the body.

    Hyperhidrosis help is available.

Sweating to this degree is uncomfortable and disabling: causing embarrassment, anxiety and stress. It can interfer with all aspects of life: changing self image, causing depression and interfers with work choices, social life and relationships.

    Hyperhidrosis: Don’t Suffer Alone.

Hyperhidrosis affects millions of people around the world, yet it is poorly understood sometimes even by health professionals. The majority of people who have hyperhidrosis are never diagnosed or treated because of this lack of awareness.

At our clinic in Brisbane, we treat people with excessive sweating of the underarm, face, body, hands and feet. Primary Hyperhidrosis responds well to injections, however if you have an underlying cause it is important that this is correctly diagnosed and treated

Local injections are a simple and effective treatment for hyperhidrosis of the underarm

Local injections are second line treatment for underarm hyperhidrosis.

Injections with a purified protein more commonly used to get rid of wrinkles is the next treatment option if underarm sweating fails to respond to antiperspirants. The injections are a safe, quick and effective treatment to stop excessive sweating of the underarm.

    Hyperhidrosis- excessive sweating treatment Brisbane

    What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is characterised by sweating in excess of the amount necessary to maintain normal body temperature. There are two main categories: primary and secondary hyperhidrosis.

  • Primary hyperhidrosis is usually an inherited condition that arises in childhood or teenage years.
  • Secondary hyperhidrosis is a result of an underlying medical conditions, including hormonal, neurological or skin disorders, use of certain drugs, cancer, chronic infections or excess nerve transmitter discharge.
  • It is important that you have your excessive sweating assessed to diagnose which form of hyperhidrosis affects you. The treatment of secondary hyperhidrosis involves treatment of the underlying condition.

Treatment available to patients with primary hyperhidrosis

Treatment of primary hyperhidrosis is split into non-surgical and surgical options.

  • Non-surgical include topical antiperspirants, local injections, Iontophoresis or medication.
  • The only viable surgical option is liposuction of armpit tissue. Sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis is not considered a reliable treatment and recent research has shown that many people have a decreased quality of life after this procedure.
  • At Brisbane clinic we treat people with excessive sweating of the underarms and face.

    Iontophoresis for Hyperhidrosis.

Iontophoresis with tap water alone has proven very successful in the majority of people with hyperhidrosis of the hands and feet with limited use for the armpits.

How does iontophoresis stop excessive sweating?

The way iontophoresis stops excessive sweating is unknown. It is speculated the treatment causes the sweat duct to be blocked by formation of a thick plug.

  • Up to 85% of people will see the sweating ease after 4-7 treatments.
  • This will last a variable amount of time; from a few days to weeks when the treatment must be repeated.
  • This treatment can be done as many times as necessary; is safe, cheap and can be performed at home.
  • If tap water does not work alone, then a prescription medication can be added to the water.
  • Hyperhidrosis Brisbane- Iontophoresis

    How is iontophoresis performed?

The hands or feet are placed in plastic baths which are filled with water and a very low electric current is turned on. The procedure is painless but the user may experiences a ‘pins and needles’ sensation in the hands or feet.

    Other treatment options.

If iontophoresis fails local injections are considered the next ‘minimally invasive’ treatment option.

Email us if you want to know more about specific products.

Frustratingly, TGA regulations in Australia restrict naming of these injections as they are class S4 medication to be administered by a Doctor with training. They are approved for treatment of excessive sweating of the underarm and have a well established safety profile.

How much does Hyperhidrosis cost you?

I found a great resource article on the International Hyperhidrosis website Sweathelp. It is a questionnaire on the financial cost of hyperhidrosis.

The question - “if you weigh up how much excessive sweating costs in day to day living, perhaps it will help make the decision on affordability of hyperhidrosis treatment options easier”.

    Hyperhidrosis treatment Brisbane

    International Hyperhidrosis Website Questionnaire.

If you are trying to decide whether you can afford the expense of hyperhidrosis treatments use the questions below to figure out how excessive sweating currently affects your finances.

Perhaps, by spending money on treatments, you may be able to save in other areas.

    • Dry-cleaning and stain removal?
    • New shirts, dresses, shoes, socks, or other clothing?
    • Over-the-counter antiperspirants, deodorants, or powders?
    • Pads, ”shields“, towels, or materials to absorb perspiration?

Also consider your job and employment opportunities.

  • Has excessive sweating affected your income or your potential for career advancement?
  • Has it affected your personal or social life?
  • These costs are hard to measure but you may find that the money spent on treating hyperhidrosis is worthwhile because of the improvement to your quality of life.

At our clinic in Brisbane, we treat people with excessive sweating of the underarms, face, hands and feet. Primary hyperhidrosis responds well to injections, however if you have an underlying cause it is important that this is correctly diagnosed and treated.

    Antiperspirants for Hyperhidrosis.

Antiperspirants are considered the first line of treatment for excessive sweating of the underarms, hands, feet, and sometimes face because they are the safest and least invasive. They work simply by blocking the sweat ducts and reducing the amount of sweat that reaches the skin.

    Hyperhidrosis Brisbane - antiperspirants

    What ingredients are in antiperspirants?

The most widely used ingredients in antiperspirants are metallic salts containing aluminium chloride.

  • Aluminium chloride concentrations of 10% to 15% are recommended for the underarms.
  • For the hands or feet, higher concentrations are needed - usually around 30%.
  • What problems are associated with antiperspirants?

  • A high percentage of people experience irritation and rashes from aluminium chloride antiperspirants
  • These antiperspirants can often damage clothes
  • What happens if antiperspirants fail?

Local injections are now seen as a “minimally invasive” treatment option for people who fail to respond to more-conservative treatment prior to resorting to surgery.

Email us if you want to know more about specific products.

Frustratingly, TGA regulations in Australia restrict naming of these injections as they are class S4 medication to be administered by a Doctor with training. They are approved for treatment of excessive sweating of the underarm and have a well established safety profile.

    Hyperhidrosis - Hands

Excessive sweating of the Hands also known as palmar hyperhidrosis causes considerable social distress and can interfer with occupational function. The hands are the most common site for excessive sweating to occur and can be the most difficult to treat. What treatments are available to people who suffer palmar hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis treatment Brisbane - excessive sweating of the hands.

    Treating Palmar hyperhidrosis

  • antiperspirants seldom work because the skin is thicker on the hands.
  • Iontophoresis is the treatment of choice and successful using tap water in 85% of all cases.
  • Those who do not get a complete cessation of sweating using only tap water, can obtain, on prescription a drug which can be added to the water.
  • Injections are available for treatment of excessive sweating, these can be very successful but there are risks associated with these and should only be considered after consultation with a Doctor experienced in treatment of hyperhidrosis.
  • Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy is a surgical option but this is considered a last resort step because of considerable side effects.
