Hyperhidrosis Treatment
The treatment of hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating depends on which part of the body it affects. The following summary applies to primary hyperhidrosis only. It is important that you have your excessive sweating assessed and diagnosed correctly before undertaking any treatment.
Primary Hyperhidrosis Treatment Summary
1. Local Treatments
Antiperspirants for hyperhidrosis of the armpit, hands and feet. The most effective anti-perspirants for excessive sweating contain aluminum chloride. There is long acting forms such as dri chlor available. They work by by stopping the sweat reaching the surface.
Iontophoresis - used for hyperhidrosis of the hands and feet. This requires a series of treatments, usually every two days for up to 10 treatments until the sweating decreases, with an ongoing maintenance program as required.
2. New Treatments
Injections are used for treatment of hyperhidrosis of the armpit, hands and feet. More commonly used for cosmetic purposes the injections have been increasingly used to gain relief from excessive sweating. It is an effective treatment and in the armpit can give relief for 6-12 months.
3. Oral medication and surgery.
Various medications taken by mouth have been used to block the nerve receptors that signal sweat production. However they also affect all such nerve receptors in the body and all have potential side effects. They can be used in generalised hyperhidrosis but rarely indicated for excessive sweating in local areas.
Sympathectomy - Is not indicated for treatment of hyperhidrosis unless there is severe excessive sweating of the hands that does not respond to anything else. The surgery disrupts the autonomic nervous system impulses to the sweat glands. There is a risk of permanent irreversible damage and side effects and quality of life may be worse after treatment.
Liposuction of the armpit is not reliable and should only be considered after local injections have failed. Surgical excision because of scarring risk is not performed anymore.
