Palmitoyl Pentapeptide is the active ingredient in Boots No 7

Research on Palmitoyl Pentapeptide to date.

Studies of Palmitoyl pentapeptide-3 existed prior to the latest research by Professor Griffiths but these had been sponsored by the manufacturers (Sederma and Proctor & Gamble)

The studies compared Palmitoyl pentapeptide-3 to retinol and showed an average of 9 percent increase in skin thickness observed after 4 months for both Palmitoyl pentapeptide-3 and retinol. However the Palmitoyl pentapeptide increased skin thickness faster than the retinol and without the side effects of the later. Source here and here

Australian alternative 5% peptide serum

Because of the lack of availability of Boots No 7 I had a serum developed with the same active ingredients as the Boots No 7 - this peptide serum is available through our clinic. It is a lighter serum than the original more suited to Australia’s humid conditions. The percentage of Palmitoyl pentapeptide in the serum is 6% and it retails for $44 Australian (50ml). An advantage of this particular Palmitoyl pentapeptide serum is, that unlike the original it does not contain parabens as a preservative.

How does Palmitoyl Pentapeptide stimulate collagen production?

Palmitoyl Pentapeptide was developed to mimic natural peptides found in the skin called Matrikines. These small peptides are formed when skin proteins are damaged and broken down and work as cell messengers which regulate the skin repair and wound healing process - leading to increased production of collagen. Very clever!

Boots No 7 - the Manchester study.

  • The Manchester study proved that it had a similar effect to retinoic acid.
  • Testing was carried out on volunteers, not in test tubes, and by measuring levels of fibrillin, which is one of the skin’s proteins that are affected by sun damage to skin.
  • The study showed that the serum began to repair damage to the skin’s structure.
  • Women volunteers who tested the products found measurable improvements in wrinkle depth.
  • Previous studies on Palmitoyl Pentapeptide

  • Palmitoyl pentapeptide shown to be effective at 3-5% concentration.
  • Skin biopsies conducted indicated palmitoyl pentapeptide triggered growth in elastin and collagen.
  • Demonstrated improvements in skin roughness, wrinkle volume, and wrinkle depth.

Boots No 7 A Revolution In Skin Care.

Boots No 7 ‘Protect and Perfect’ or ‘Restore and Renew’

Marketed under Protect and Perfect in the UK and Restore and Renew in the USA, the product is currently not available in Australia. Judging by the company’s inability to keep up with large Northern hemisphere markets it will be a long time in coming. Since the BBC Horizons aired its show ‘Dr Reagan’s Beauty Parlour’ the product vanished from the shelves.

A final word from the scientist who formulated this product

The man responsible for the Boots’ wrinkle-buster is Steve Barton, a biologist who spent 12 years in dermatological research before joining the chain as a scientific adviser 17 years ago has this to say about the Protect and Perfect Serum.

    • “The lotion takes 4-8 weeks to work.”
