Boots No 7 Protect and Perfect is a silicone based serum that contains a good mix of antioxidants A (retinyl palmitate), C (Sodium ascorbyl phosphate), E (tocopherol) mulberry extract and ginseng.
However the active ingredient that ia believed to cause the decrease in wrinkle depth reported in the media is a palmitoyl-pentapeptide. It is not a new ingredient however prior studies where sponsored by Sederma the company that manufacturers it.
Australian alternative 5% peptide serum
Because of the lack of availability of Boots No 7 in Australia I had a serum developed with the same active ingredients as the Boots No 7 - this peptide serum is available through our clinic.
It is a silicone based serum, containing anti-oxidants A, C, E with beta-carotene and green tea extract in an attempt to replicate the active ingredients and pricing of the Boots product. The percentage of Palmitoyl pentapeptide in the serum is 5% and it retails for $44 Australian (30ml).

A final word from the scientist who formulated this product
The man responsible for the Boots’ wrinkle-buster is Steve Barton, a biologist who spent 12 years in dermatological research before joining the chain as a scientific adviser 17 years ago has this to say about the Protect and Perfect Serum.
• “The lotion takes 4-8 weeks to work.”
• “Wrinkles won’t disappear. This is not a cosmetic injections, but they are significantly improved.”
• The serum has no magic ingredient. It is just a combination of products,”

[…] The active ingredient in the product is a lipo-pentapeptide, which had previous research backing its effectiveness, but unfortunately the research was backed by the company that produced it, so it was viewed with a little apprehension. Currently most products on the market do not have sufficient concentrations of the active ingredient to be effective. So I contacted a friend of mine Jacine, who has used this ingredient in her skin care range for some time now (see post from 7th May) . […]

Hi,
I tried this serum and was really excited about it so I bought 3!.. Ive just been reading about how it can make some people prone to break outs. I have now twigged what is making my skin so spotty. I had high hopes but i should learn.. dont believe the hype.
Dr Joanne Turner responded on 06 Aug 2007 at 5:31 am #
Hello Michelle, Yes the Boots No 7 serum can cause breakouts in some people the Eclogite serum was formulated slightly differently to overcome this. Everyone should be wary of hype in the cosmetic industry. The Boots product however has been shown to reverse photo damage, fine lines and wrinkles becasue of the palmitoyl pentapeptide, it is unfortunate that you have reacted in this way.

hi can dis product can treat strechmark????
Dr Jo Turner responded on 27 Aug 2007 at 10:32 am #
Sorry Claire, it has not been shown to do anything for stretch marks. Recent trials have however been promising the FRAXEL lasers may treat stretch marks. This is obviously very exciting as nothing to date has really had any benifit with stretch marks.
