    Facial Pigmentation Treatment

Acquired facial pigmentation is caused from increased amounts of melanin deposited in the skin. The recommended treatment depends on the underlying cause of the pigmentation.

    Common causes of facial pigmentation.

    1. Sun damage
Most areas of Australia have high UV levels and the excessive exsposure results in abnormal facial pigmentation and premature aging with wrinkles and surface capillaries.

Pigmentation that results from sun damage: freckles, liver spots, age spots and sun spots are common terms to describe pigmentation caused from the sun.

    2. Hormonal
Hormal pigmentation results from a combination of increased oestrogen and sun exsposure.
Melasma or chloasma caused by pregnancy or the pill has a maplike appearance common on the upper lip, cheeks and forehead.

Treatment of facial pigmentation depends on the cause.

Treatment options for pigmentation that result from sundamage can be treated with intense pulsed light treatment, laser treatment and prescription lightening creams.

Treatment of melasma responds better to skin lightening treatments or fractional laser treatments.

It is important that the cause of your facial pigmentation is correctly diagnosed so an appropriate treatment can be provided. You will need to book in with one of our Doctors for a Medical Skin Consultation. This attracts a fee which is partially claimable on Medicare.

    Treating Capillaries On The Nose.

‘Spider Veins’ or ‘Broken Capillaries’ are common terms used to describe thin surface capillaries that become visible. They most commonly occur at the side of the nose. They can also affect the entire nose, cheeks and chin. They most commonly occur in people with fair skin and result from sun damage or rosacea.

Treatment Of Spider Veins With Intense Pulsed Light.

Spider veins around the nose tend to appear as faint lines that streak onto the cheek whereas veins on the nose tend to be more like a web giving the nose a diffuse red appearance. Intense Pulsed light treatment can be effective to treat these vessels. From experience isolated vessels respond more effectively than diffuse redness.

Intense pulsed light uses light in the visible light range. This is pulsed onto the skin and is attracted to elements of colour in the skin (chromophores). One of these chromophores is the red in blood cells. Once the light energy is absorbed into the vessel it turns to heat energy causing damage to the vessel.

A series of treatments is required generally 4-8.

What Treatment Is Appropriate For Your Concerns?

Not everyone is suitable for Intense Pulsed Light Treatment. You will need to see our Doctor to diagnose and assess your skin type and the appearance of the vessels to give an opinion on what you can expect from treatment. Medical skin consultations attract a fee which is partially claimable on Medicare.

  • You will have an assessment with one of our Doctors.
  • During this assessment they will discuss treatment options including realistic expectations of the outcome.
  • They will discuss what is involved in each treatment including possible side effects
  • They will give you a plan and accurate quote so you can make an informed decision on treatment.

    Facial Capillary Treatment

Surface facial capillaries occur when tiny vessels in the skin are damaged by the sun and other factors, causing them to be permanently visible.

    What Causes Facial Capillaries?

  • Inherited factors: facial capillaries occur more often in individuals with fair skin, blonde or red hair and blue green eyes
  • Sun damage is the most prevalent cause of surface facial capillaries.
  • Rosacea is a common underlying cause of facial capillaries.
  • Alcohol, spicy foods and caffeine can dilate the capillaries but do not cause them.
  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Treatment For Facial Capillaries

Intense pulsed light is a light based therapy that can be used to treat surface facial capillaries. IPL uses a spectrum of light in the visible light range which is pulsed onto the skin.

The light is then absorbed into elements of colour in the skin, one of these elements is the red in surface capillaries. Once absorbed the light energy turns to heat energy to damage the blood vessel.

  • There is no down time with the treatments.
  • 4-6 treatments is generally required, although sometimes this is more or less
  • Treament cost depends on the area affected.
  • You will need to be assessed by one of our Doctors for diagnosis and skin typing to determine if you are suitable for treatment with intense pulsed light. These Medical skin consultations attract a fee which is partially claimable on Medicare.

    Wrinkle Relaxing Injections

Muscle relaxing injections can be used to treat rhytids (wrinkles and lines) in the upper half of the face: eye wrinkles, forehead lines and frown lines that develope between the eyebrows.

How do muscle relaxing injections work?

The treatments work by relaxing muscle movement that causes the wrinkle formation on the surface. Once the muscles are relaxed the skin on the surface becomes smoother.

  • when the muscles that cause the frown expression are relaxed the vertical frown line between the eyes can reduce.
  • when used around the eyes they reduce the appearance of eye wrinkles or crows feet
  • when used in the forehead they can smooth forehead lines .
  • Muscle relaxing injections do not include dermal fillers which are used to treat lines and folds in the lower half of the face.

If you are interested in more information please phone to make an appointment with one of our Doctors. They will assess you suitability for treatment, give a realistic opinion on what can be achieved, explain what the process involves including potential side effects and be able to give an accurate quote.

    How To Treat Blackheads

Treating blackhead with conventional treatments of pore strips, scrubs and facials will not work, except to temporarily extract the contents. Blackheads are caused from a build up of sebum (oil) in the skin pores and blockage of the pore with exfoliated dead skin cells. Being open to air, the sebum and clogged material oxidise and turns dark. Hence the term blackhead.

    Salicylic Acid Exfoliates The Pore

BHA (beta hydroxy acid) or Salicylic Acid is oil soluble so it will penetrate the oil in the oil gland and exfoliate the contents and pore lining.

Salicylic acid products needs to be concentration of 1-2% in ph approximately 3.

We sell a very good Salicylic acid gel: Cost $41 for 118ml. This can be applied once or twice daily and progressively exfoliate the surface and skin pore. It is safe to use long term as part of skin routine.
