Use of cleansers in treating Acne is very important to remove oil build up, makeup and dirt from the surface of the skin, preparing it for any active acne product you put on.
Excessive use, or use of overly drying cleansers can make the acne worse.
What Is The Best Cleanser For Acne?
• Use a gentle cleanser. (This concept is hard for someone with acne, as they feel they want to get their skin really clean) but over cleaning with harsh drying cleansers aggravates inflammation and can stimulate more oil production. Hydrating face washes give better results in reducing acne.
• Do not use soaps or bars, they contain ingredients that can block the pore and are generally at a high ph which will disrupt the natural protective layer of the skin, known as the acid mantle and potentially increase the presence of bacteria inside the pore.
• Do not use products that contain harsh detergents, abrasive scrub particles or astringents. These can all hurt the skin, cause irritation and stimulate oil production.
• Do not use products that contain witch hazel, alcohol or irritating essential oils such as peppermint, eucalyptus or citrus oils. These ingredients are extremely irritating and impair the skin’s ability to heal itself and kill bacteria.

Hi Jo
My son is a teeneger and is using Proactive, it seems to be working. What do you think of this probuct?
Dr Joanne Turner responded on 26 Mar 2007 at 10:04 pm #
The primary active ingredient in proactive is benzoyl peroxide which is a very good anti-bacterial agent for use of mild acne. Some of our patients elect to use this in combination with treatments such as microdermabrasion we give to speed clearance, and I am quite happy with this. It is not quite the magic treatment it claims to be, there is a lot of marketing surrounding it, but it is a good product for mild acne. Once the severity of the acne increases, other measure would need to be added.

Hi Jo,
I appreciate you comments on Proactive. I am fortunate (more correctly, my daughter is) to have a beautiful 15 year old with good skin.
Whilst knowing that it is a good choice for her skin type, i look at it as GREAT training for her to be attending to her skin regularly.
Thanks for letting us know that we are not just ‘buying the hype’
Kiama

Thankyou Kiama for a really good comment. You are correct, it is good for everyone to start early with a good regime to maintain their skin health. Even the basics of regular cleansing and moisturising if required and treating any skin conditions such as acne, and of course SUNSCREEN daily to the face, will help retard aging to the face. Proactive was in fact designed by two female dermatologists in the states so they had a bit of an inside on what is good basic acne care. They have done very well, which I think is great. I am glad to try and decrease any hype about cosmetic skin care, there is so much around, and we daily have women who are spending alot of money on products that have no basis that they work, and in some cases can be causing more harm that good. The proactive does not work in all cases, and some of their range can be irritating for some skin types. If it working for your daughter, wonderful.
