There is a myth that oily foods and chocolate make acne worse. There is no evidence that this is true. There are however foods that have been shown to improve acne. So what diet should you follow to help keep your face clear?
What foods are believed to help reduce acne?
Research has shown that a diet low in carbohydrates and relatively high in proteins helps reduce acne blemishes.
Avoid refined sugars and low GI carbohydrates (lollies, fizzy drinks, white sugar and bread) and include good quality protein in you diet.
Omega 3 fatty acids contained in fish, nuts, seeds and oils are believed to reduce the obstruction of oil glands.
Include olive oil, avocado, nuts and fish in your diet or try flaxseed oil supplements to reduce obstruction.
Foods that are rich in antioxidants assist the skins immunity and protection against infection should be included in the diet.
Fresh fruit and vegetables and green tea boost skins protection.
Does chocolate cause acne?
No, in fact good quality chocolate because it is rich in antioxidants and good oils may help protect your skin. Avoid lower quality chocolates with excessive sugar.
