Understanding what causes acne will help you understand the treatment regime your Doctor prescribes, as ideally acne treatments should address all of the underlying causes.
However it does nothing to relieve the distress it can cause. For this you need rapid clearance so you do not have to put up with the distress that acne causes longer than necessary.
Acne - 4 factors that contribute to blemish formation
1. Increased oil production in the sebaceous (oil) glands- under the influence of hormones.
2. Increased cell production in the oil glands, accumulation of dead cells causing blockage of the gland. This allows the oil in the sebaceous gland to build up causing blackheads when the pore remains open or whiteheads when the pore opening is closed.
3. Bacterial infection with Propionibacterium acnes (or P. acnes) which grows in the oil rich blocked gland.
4. Inflammation occurs because of the bacterial infection causing redness and swelling- papules. Eventually the gland can rupture under the skin, this causes intense inflammation and formation of pustules-pimples. If the blockage is deeper in the skin cystic nodules form.

HI Dr Joanne
How much does a person’s diet affect the condition of their skin and the formation of acne? Are there any vitamins that help the body reduce acne formation? Thank you
Dr Joanne Turner responded on 07 Apr 2007 at 3:22 pm #
There is some research suggesting a link between diet and acne. However it is not the fat content of the food, as teenagers where once told to avoid things like chocolate and high fat foods. Any association between chocolate, fat and acne however was disproven.
Research published in the Archives of Dermatology (Dec, 2002) however did find that populations on low-carb diets seem to be less prone to blemishes. We have an excellent publication that discusses the role of protein and low carb (not no carb) diet in helping keep acne under control. We could organise to have this posted to you, if you contact us by email.

What might predispose someone to cystic nodules as opposed to pustules?
I get a pimple very rarely, but when I do it’s usually a large, deep, painful nodule that takes ages to go away… and of course applying topical treatments doesn’t work. It’s annoying.
How common is acne in adults?
Dr Joanne Turner responded on 24 Apr 2007 at 10:12 am #
About 5% of women continue to get acne through out there adult life, which just doesn’t seem fair. This is largely hormonal and tends to be around the time of menstrual periods.
As far as the severity and type of acne it is in part heritary, so you need the increased oil production (triggered by the hormones), as well as the structure of the pore/hair follicle gland is more prone to obstruction in people who manifest with acne ie: the opening of the pore is more prone to getting obstructed.
As far as whether a pustule or a cystic nodule develop, this is dependent on how deep in the skin the inflammation in the pore occurs. For superficial pores, the inflammation and infection manifest on the surface, if the pore is deeper, once it is obstructed the inflammation and infection manifest deeper and you get painful cystic nodules
.
Other things that can make acne worse include stress, oily make up or sunscreen heat and humidity
