Acne - Skin Care Products That Make It Worse.

trying to clear acne blemishes - Skin Revision Brisbane

Skin Care Products guaranteed to cause breakouts.

Most cosmetics have ingredients in their bases that cause acne and make it worse.

  • isopropyl myristate
  • isopropyl palmitate
  • C13-14 Isoparaffin
  • Natural Oils that that cause breakouts

  • Almond oil
  • Rosehip oil
  • Apricot Oil
  • All of these natural oils are high in oleic acid which is an Omega 9 essential fatty acid. Omega 9 essential fatty acids are great for the inside of your body but not for your skin if you are prone to acne.

The facts behind oleic acid producing acne.

Linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid that is normally found with sebum in the sebaceous glands; this creates a liquid quality to the sebum and allows it to flow out onto and sooth the skin.

In the absence of linoleic acid in the sebaceous glands it is replaced with oleic acid. The combination of oleic acid and sebum is less viscous and promotes formation of plugs: blackheads and whiteheads and increases susceptibility to acne infection.

Adding oleic acid to your skin in the form of skin care products may not be a wise idea.

    Linoleic acid

Linoleic acid is found in flax seed, evening primrose oil, fish oil, safflower oil, pumpkin seeds, brazil nuts, sesame seeds, avocados and wheat germ oil. Modern foods lack these essential oils. Instead they contain trans-fatty acids that may break down the body’s supply of essential fatty acids.

    Dietary tip to avoiding acne.

People with very dry skin and continual follicle blockage that lead to blackheads, whiteheads and acne - may benefit from increasing their consumption of foods rich in linoleic acid or taking supplements such as flax seed oil.

    Boots No 7 Alternative.

Considering the lack of availability of the Boots no 7 product in Australia, what alternatives are available? First a little background on the Boots product.

Boot No 7 Protect and Perfect Serum- active ingredient.

Palmitoyl Pentapeptide is the active ingredient of Boots No 7. It is a synthetic peptide that was developed for use as a skin care ingredient to stimulate collagen production and thus provide a skin anti-wrinkle benefit.

How does Palmitoyl Pentapeptide stimulate collagen production?

Palmitoyl Pentapeptide was developed to mimic natural peptides found in the skin called Matrikines. These small peptides are formed when skin proteins are damaged and broken down and work as cell messengers which regulate the skin repair and wound healing process - leading to increased production of collagen. Very clever!

Boots No 7 - the Manchester study.

  • The Manchester study proved that it had a similar effect to retinoic acid.
  • Testing was carried out on volunteers, not in test tubes, and by measuring levels of fibrillin, which is one of the skin’s proteins that are affected by sun damage to skin.
  • The study showed that the serum began to repair damage to the skin’s structure.
  • Women volunteers who tested the products found measurable improvements in wrinkle depth.
  • Previous studies on Palmitoyl Pentapeptide

  • Palmitoyl pentapeptide shown to be effective at 3-5% concentration.
  • Skin biopsies conducted indicated palmitoyl pentapeptide triggered growth in elastin and collagen.
  • Demonstrated improvements in skin roughness, wrinkle volume, and wrinkle depth.

  • Australian alternative 5% peptide serum

Because of the lack of availability of Boots No 7 I had a serum developed with the same active ingredients as the Boots No 7 - this peptide serum is available through our clinic. It is a silicone based serum, containing anti-oxidants A, C, E with beta-carotene and green tea extract in an attempt to replicate the active ingredients and pricing of the Boots product. The percentage of Palmitoyl pentapeptide in the serum is 5% and it retails for $44 Australian (30ml). An advantage of this particular Palmitoyl pentapeptide serum is, that unlike the original it does not contain parabens as a preservative.

Boots No 7 A Revolution In Skin Care.

Boots No 7 ‘Protect and Perfect’ or ‘Restore and Renew’

Marketed under Protect and Perfect in the UK and Restore and Renew in the USA, the product is currently not available in Australia. Judging by the company’s inability to keep up with large Northern hemisphere markets it will be a long time in coming. Since the BBC Horizons aired its show ‘Dr Reagan’s Beauty Parlour’ the product vanished from the shelves.

Boots No 7 Serum - What Is Different?

    1. The active ingredient, palmitoyl pentapeptide, is the first product to meet the results achieved from prescription retinoids as an anti-wrinkle treatment.

    2. The product has blown the cover: you do not need to pay exorbitant amounts of money to get good skin care product.

    Palmitoyl Pentapeptide

The active ingredient in Boots No 7, Palmitoyl Pentapeptide is not new, it is manufactured by Sederma and clinical studies on its effectiveness existed prior to the latest research by Professor Griffiths at the Manchester University.

Professor Griffiths: “At both basic science and clinical levels Boots No7 Protect & Perfect has been shown scientifically to repair photo-aged skin and improve the fine wrinkles associated with photo-ageing.” Reported in Daily Mail 2nd April

Boots No 7 serum a revolution in skin care cost

The original BBC program compared it to the much-hyped La Prairie Cellular range which could cost as much as £229 for a small 30ml pot. The Boots No 7 costing £17 won hands down. The real revolution - proven fact: good skin care need not cost a fortune.

    Diamond Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion was developed in Italy in 1985 and has become a popular skin resurfacing technique because of low risk and rapid recovery compared with other resurfacing techniques.

The original microdermabrasion machines used crystals with a sand blasting technique, however the newer diamond tip microdermabrasion is a more comfortable procedure.

Microdermabrasion - anti-aging and acne treatments Brisbane

Microdermabrasion has two main therapeutic uses:

  • Anti-aging skin care: removing surface dead skin layers and stimulating new cell growth and collagen.
  • Exfoliation for rapid clearance of acne blemishes.
  • Microdermabrasion is best delivered in a course of treatments

Although you notice the difference after one microdermabrasion treatment the true therapeutic benefit for acne clearance and anti-aging skin care is achieved with a course of treatments.

    Advantages of microdermabrasion

  • The new diamond tip microdermabrasions are painless.
  • There is only minimal facial redness afterwards, which clears within a couple of hours.
  • Simple and quick to perform.
  • No downtime.

    Broken Capillaries Of The Face

What are broken capillaries of the face and how do you get rid of them?

Broken capillaries is a term used for very small surface vessels that appear on the face.

Sun exposure, excessive alcohol and stimulants such as tea and coffee, cause the facial skin and capillary walls to lose elasticity and the capillaries beneath the skin become visible. Because they become more noticeable, they are described as ‘broken’. The vessels however are not broken.

    What can treat broken capillaries?

Traditional treatment using diathermy has been superseded by less painful, safer and more effective light therapies.

Intense pulsed light systems are a very effective non invasive
    treatment for broken facial capillaries.

Dermal Fillers - Surgery Free Facelift: Step 2.

The second step in a non-surgical face lift is filling: to address areas of deep lines, folds and sagging.

Reasonably constant once you have reached the age of 40 are: nasolabial folds, marionette lines and fine lines and wrinkles.

These are caused principally by collagen loss in the face, so treating them requires replacing volume with either dermal fillers or collagen regeneration treatments - “liquid facelift.”

This article discusses dermal fillers, and the following article addresses .collagen regeneration treatments or the “liquid facelift”.

Dermal Fillers step number 2 in non-surgical facelift Brisbane

Dermal fillers to plump out lines, wrinkles and folds.

Static wrinkles and folds develop with loss of collagen, elastin and other support structures for the skin of the face. With collagen loss the skin is less able to hold itself so sagging starts and wrinkles, lines and folds become constant. Dermal fillers are injected beneath the wrinkle or line to ‘fill in’ or ‘plump up’ the depression.

What can be treated with Dermal Fillers

The areas most commonly treated with dermal fillers:

  • Nasolabial Folds- the folds that run from the nose to the mouth can be filled to give a more youthful appearance.
  • Marionette Lines - the lines that run from the corner of the mouth to the chin- can be retored to get rid of ‘the sad look’ around the mouth by creating support and up turning of the mouth again.
  • In addition to plumping out of wrinkles and lines, injectable dermal fillers are also used for rejuvenation of lips, this is discussed in an article later in this series.

    Special considerations with Dermal fillers.

  • local anaesthetic cream and at times a local facial block is required.
  • The fillers give varying degrees of swelling and carry risk of bruising: for this reason they are best administered after work or going into a weekend, rather than a lunch time appointment. Certainly I would not advise these treatments before an important meeting, date or family function. (Not the morning of that new job interview for example).
  • When you discuss your plan for a non-surgical facelift your Doctor should consider these issues: so have your diary at hand.
